Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought: announcement of 2024 laureate

President Metsola will announce the winner of this year’s Sakharov Prize to plenary around 12.00, following the decision by the EP Conference of Presidents. The three finalists are, in alphabetical order, Dr Gubad Ibadoghlu (Azerbaijan), María Corina Machado and President-elect Edmundo González Urrutia (Venezuela), and Women Wage Peace & Women of the Sun (Israel/Palestine).

Youth radicalisation and new technologies

From around 10.30, MEPs will discuss ways to tackle how new technologies are abused to manipulate and radicalise young people through hate speech and anti-democratic discourse.

Closing the EU skills gap. Starting at 9.00, MEPs will discuss how to support people in the digital and green transitions to ensure inclusive growth and competitiveness, in light of the proposals in the Draghi report.

Protecting our oceans. In the afternoon, plenary will assess the threats to marine protected areas in the EU and debate how to safeguard coastal communities.

Votes

At noon, plenary will vote on two resolutions on:

  • the situation in Azerbaijan, violation of human rights and international law, and relations with Armenia, and
  • the People’s Republic of China’s misinterpretation of the UN resolution 2758 and its continuous military provocations around Taiwan.
