How Iconic Cheerleading Styles Influenced Fashion Statements Over the Years

Scotty Turner of Unsplah

When you think about sports and fashion, what comes to mind? For the most part, one wouldn’t say that sports jerseys are fashionable. But there is an area in the world of sports where fashion is combined with functionality for amazing results.

Cheerleading uniforms are the epitome of what a fashionable sports outfit would be. How did cheerleading styles develop over the years, and in what ways did the fashion industry influence the looks that cheerleaders know and love now? Let’s find out!

The Beginning of Cheer Styles

Today’s cheerleading styles are largely about functionality and comfort, with a definite sense of style. We see everything from sublimated uniforms with custom team colors to cheer uniforms with metallic accents or rhinestones. However, the cheerleading uniforms that are popular now are vastly different from the styles from years ago.

When it all began, fashion impacted cheerleading looks. But one could say that they looked anything but comfortable. Long skirts paired with a button-down shirt and sweater were the cheerleading fashion in the 1950s. While certainly a stylish look for those times, trying to perform cheerleading stunts in these uniforms was probably not as convenient or comfortable as performing in today’s styles.

The 60s brought a minimalizing of the outfit that was popular in the 50s. While skirts were still longer than the ones used today, they were shorter than their 50s counterparts. Button-down shirts were still commonly used, but fortunately, sweaters fell to the away side

With fashion changing in the 70s and 80s to be less modest than in the previous decades, cheer skirts became more of a mini skirt style, and cheerleading fashion as a whole became more about comfort.

As the decades passed and fashion styles continued to change, so did cheer uniform designs. The 90s and early 00s brought custom options and embellishments, such as more variety with fonts and metallic accents.

Fashion has always shown up in cheerleading styles. And cheerleading looks have often shown up in fashion. Here are a few cheerleading looks from past decades that have been seen in some of fashion’s most iconic outfits.

Britney Spears’ Outfit in ‘Hit Me Baby One More Time’

Britney’s 1999 hit made schoolgirl styles hugely popular in the late 1990s and early 2000s. While people stated that her look was a school uniform, it was reminiscent of cheer outfits as well. Just look at her pom pom hair elastics, pleated skirt, and high socks.

The Timeless Cheer Skirt

Undoubtedly, one of the most popular items in a cheerleading outfit has always been the skirt. And while we’ve seen differing lengths throughout the years, it’s always held steady as a staple. From sporty pleated mini skirts to elegant pleated maxi skirts, we’ve seen the cheer skirt style featured in many different designs over the years.

White Sneakers

Throughout the years, sneakers have been a component of any good cheerleading fit. It makes sense, as they offer the comfort and dependability needed for cheerleaders to do their routines. But, not surprisingly, the same type of sneakers can often be seen in today’s trendiest looks. Sneakers (specifically white sneakers) have been in style over many decades and remain a great accessory to any fashionable outfit!

Pom-Pom Inspired Looks

Pom poms can be found on a variety of styles. You can see them on sweaters, necklaces, hair accessories, and more. Not only are they fun to add to outfits, but pom-pom-inspired looks are often vibrant and colorful. This makes for a girlish yet fun look that doesn’t seem to be going out of style. Poms-poms are not only for cheerleaders; they are also a part of many outfits for women.

School Letters on Shirts & Jackets

Many cheerleading outfits featured the school’s letter or abbreviation on it, much like a bomber jacket that all the jocks would wear. This trend has bled into everyday fashion, with school-inspired jackets and crop tops making an impact on fashion.

You’ve had a glimpse at how fashion has influenced cheerleading styles and vice versa. We’ve learned how cheerleading uniforms have developed and morphed over the years. So, what are today’s cheerleaders wearing?

Today’s cheerleading uniform styles are a sophisticated blend of functionality and fashion designed to enhance performance while making a bold visual impact. Modern uniforms typically use lightweight, moisture-wicking fabrics that provide comfort and allow for a full range of motion. These materials help keep cheerleaders cool and dry during intense routines. Uniforms often feature vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and eye-catching embellishments like rhinestones and sequins, which add a touch of glamor. Skirt designs have become more streamlined and functional, often incorporating built-in shorts for added coverage and flexibility. Additionally, the popularity of two-piece outfits with fitted tops reflects a contemporary and dynamic aesthetic, ensuring cheerleaders look as impressive as their performances.

Customization options have also expanded, allowing teams to personalize their uniforms with unique logos, team names, and individual athlete’s names. Sustainability is becoming a priority, with some brands offering eco-friendly fabrics and production methods. Overall, today’s cheerleading uniforms successfully merge practicality, style, and personalization, catering to the evolving needs and preferences of modern cheerleaders.

The Evolution of Cheer Uniform Styles

The influence of iconic cheerleading styles on fashion statements over the years is undeniable, blending athleticism with trendsetting design. From the classic pleated skirts and pom poms of the mid-20th century to today’s sleek, bedazzled uniforms, cheerleading fashion has continuously evolved and inspired mainstream trends. This dynamic interchange showcases the power of cheerleading attire to transcend the sport and enter the realms of popular culture and everyday fashion. As cheerleading styles continue to innovate, their impact on fashion will undoubtedly remain a vibrant and influential force.
