Kimberley Rangers take global stage at 10th International Ranger Federation World Rangers Congress in France

Kimberley Rangers recently took their local expertise to the international stage, attending the 10th International Ranger Federation World Rangers Congress in France.

Bardi Jawi Oorany Rangers coordinator Tamara Moore and Ngurrara ranger Sumayah Surprise joined more than 450 rangers from across the world in the coastal town of Hyeres to represent their Kimberley communities and Country.

Hosted by the Gardes Nature de France, the triennial conference provided an invaluable opportunity for collaboration on environmental, cultural, and heritage conservation efforts.

Beginning her journey as a casual ranger with the Bardi Jawi Oorany Rangers in 2020, Ms Moore has demonstrated exceptional dedication to her work and training, becoming one of the first female rangers from the Kimberley to earn a Coxswain III certificate.

After being promoted to ranger coordinator this year and travelling overseas for the first time for the conference, Ms Moore said the experience gave her a global perspective on conservation.

“I’m listening to rangers who do the same line of work as us in their countries and witnessing the scale of the conservation efforts happening globally,” Ms Moore said.

“It’s inspiring to hear their stories and to see their dedication to their work, especially those who do it on a volunteer basis. It’s an amazing experience, and I feel very lucky to have the opportunity to attend.”

Ms Surprise, who works with Ngurrara – managed under Yununujarri Corporation – has been a ranger for several years, recently taking on a specialist fire role within the Ngurrara Rangers team.

Kimberley Land Council Land and Sea Management unit business manager Tanah Tang Wei accompanied Ms Moore to the event, taking the opportunity to explore some of Paris’ iconic attractions along the way.

“It’s been an incredible experience, a space to learn, share, and create networks with rangers across the world,” she said.

“Indigenous rangers’ dedication and commitment to protect our planet’s natural and cultural heritage is invaluable. We are here to contribute our experiences from the Kimberley.”

KLC deputy chief executive Sarah Parriman said the participation of Kimberley Rangers at the IRF World Rangers Congress underscores the critical role Indigenous rangers play in conservation efforts worldwide.

“It’s fantastic to see Indigenous-led conservation being celebrated on the world stage and to be part of a global network of rangers,” she said.

“Indigenous rangers are highly skilled and use traditional knowledge and cultural practices, combined with Western Science, to manage land, river and sea Country and deliver environmental, cultural, social and economic outcomes.

“When Kimberley rangers, who are world leaders in conservation, share their unique experiences, culture and approaches to land management, they contribute to a collective movement towards a more sustainable future.”
