Rey’s New Star Wars Movie Sees Major Departure Again

Lost, another screenwriter the Star Wars movie focusing on Rey has. This time, Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight has reportedly exited the project, which will see Daisy Ridley reprise her role from the sequel trilogy.

According to Variety (via Puck News), Knight is no longer writing the script for the Star Wars movie about Rey. No reason was given, though it’s noted Disney is already searching for new people to take on the screenplay that will see Rey attempting to create a Jedi academy. Oscar-winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is still attached to direct.

Knight originally joined the Star Wars movie in May 2023. The Peaky Blinders creator stepped in following the departures of Damon Lindelof (Lost) and Justin Britt-Gibson (Counterpart). In April 2023, the Rey film was one of three new Star Wars movies announced and reportedly planned to be the first to hit theaters. However, The Mandalorian and Grogu will be the next big Star Wars release when it premieres May 22, 2026.

While not much is known about the Rey-centric Star Wars movie, that hasn’t stopped Ridley from discussing it. For instance, in March, the actress said that Rey “probably doesn’t have children.” Additionally, Ridley has expressed her desire to bring back John Boyega’s Finn for the film. There is no official name for the project, though it reportedly won’t be called Star Wars Episode X: A New Beginning.

Meanwhile, Knight is busy with the Peaky Blinders movie, which started production roughly a month ago. The film will star Cillian Murphy, Rebecca Ferguson, Barry Keoghan, and Tim Roth.
