Shots fired in Collierville; residents concerned new development could bring crime

COLLIERVILLE, Tenn. — Shots were fired at a Collierville gas station on a busy corner Thursday night.

Late Thursday night, police say someone in a Chevy fired four shots at another vehicle at the Circle K at the corner of West Poplar and Byhalia.

No one was injured, but the incident left shattered glass at the convenience store. Police are still looking for the shooter.

“Crime is everywhere. No matter where you go, you can’t run from it,” said Collierville resident Dwight Moore. “You just need to take the precautions and be careful, but I am kind of surprised it happened here in Collierville.”

The shooting comes on the heels of a development application that was submitted to bring another convenience store to the area at Shelby Drive and Houston Levee.

Some believe the proposed new business could bring crime with it. That concern led dozens living in Collierville to share their opinions about the planned convenience store, in some 20 pages of public comments.

“It will create more crime and vandalism,” one said. Another said it could “increase crime rates in Collierville.”

But others were supportive of the business, saying, “We sure do need a store in that corner.” Another said, it “will be a wonderful addition to this side of the bridge.”

Talks surrounding the planned convenience store were on the agenda last month at the Board of Mayor and Alderman meeting.

The applicant asked that the issue be delayed. It was moved to the Nov.r 25 Board of Mayor and Alderman meeting.

Those who call the area home say they are really at a crossroads. They want to continue seeing this area grow, but there is concern it could bring with it crime. They are hoping what happened here overnight is simply an isolated case.
