Henry Cavill or Not, The Mass Effect TV Show Needs to Steal the Multiple-Endings Model from Netflix’s Bandersnatch

It’s no secret that video game adaptations are quite trending nowadays and it seems like Amazon is determined to continue that trend after the success of the Fallout TV series. It has been revealed that the next franchise that is getting a TV show is BioWare’s Mass Effect video game series. There are various rumors that actor Henry Cavill will be a part of the main cast, however, nothing is confirmed as of now.

Regardless of Henry Cavill’s involvement, Amazon needs to consider an idea that was used by Netflix for 2018’s Black Mirror: Bandersnatch. In case you don’t know, this interactive film allowed users to change the story’s outcome depending on their choices. If Amazon adapts this idea for the Mass Effect TV series, it would certainly be a treat as the video games in the series also feature in-game choices. Mass Effect 3, for example, had five different endings.

As per Variety, a TV show based on the Mass Effect video game series is in development at Amazon MGM Studios. It is confirmed that Karim Zreik will be producing under his Cedar Tree Productions banner alongside Ari Arad and Michael Gamble of Electronic Arts. Daniel Casey is set to write and executive produce the adaptation. Many rumors suggest that actor Henry Cavill would make an appearance in the show, however, there is another star that diehard fans of the franchise would love to see.

This is not the first time the video game series is getting an adaptation as the game was adapted into an animated movie called Mass Effect: Paragon Lost, which was released in 2012. The movie was set in the Mass Effect science fiction universe during the events of Mass Effect 2.

Another attempt was made in 2010 when Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. acquired the rights to a Mass Effect film, however, the project never progressed further beyond the initial planning stages because it was difficult to showcase the essence of the series in a 90-120 minute movie.

2018’s Black Mirror: Bandersnatch was an interactive film that allowed viewers to play out the story however they wanted it to. Now, to make the Mass Effect TV series the best adaptation, the studio must also adapt its different endings. Almost every Mass Effect game gave players in-game options that directly affected the storyline and to capture the true essence of the franchise, the studio must steal this concept from Black Mirror: Bandersnatch.

This will certainly boost the show’s popularity and even convince viewers to watch the show multiple times to explore every possible outcome. The Mass Effect series stands as one of the most acclaimed sci-fi RPG franchises that is well-known for its rich storytelling, deep character development, and complex moral choices. Amazon must mirror that if they wish to make the TV show a hit among the fans.
