Jack Robinson crowned WA male Surfer of the Year as Olympic performance rewarded

Jack Robinson lifting Australian surfing to new Olympic heights has seen the Margaret River local crowned as WA’s male Surfer of the Year.

Robinson was acknowledged at the WA Surfers of the Year Awards with the 26-year-old winning both the Ian Cairns Male Surfer of the Year and Mike McAuliffe Performer of the Year awards.

He had an incredible season winning two World Surf League Tour events including a dream home title at the Margaret River Pro and Hawaii’s Sunset Beach.

His performances saw him qualify for a third consecutive World Surf League Finals where he finished as the fourth-ranked surfer in the world.

However, the high point of his year was no doubt in Tahiti where he took home the silver medal from the 2024 Paris Olympics, Australia’s best-ever result in surfing, which saw him claim both coveted awards.

“It’s amazing, I’m super grateful,” Robinson said.

“You know, it’s where I grew up, and I know a lot of people say that, but I feel it when I come back here. It really grounds me every time I come home; I never forget it. So cool to see all the talent and everyone showing up here today.”

Surfing WA CEO Mark Lane praised Robinson for setting new benchmarks.

“Jack’s success is an inspiration to surfers everywhere, especially here in Western Australia,” Lane said.

“He’s not only an outstanding competitor but also a role model for the next generation of surfers coming through. His dedication, resilience, and sportsmanship set a new standard for excellence in our sport.”

Margaret River teenager Willow Hardy won the Jodie Cooper Female Surfer of the Year Award, after the 18-year-old helped Australia to Gold at the ISA World Junior Championships and currently sits second in the World Surf League Qualifying Series.

Young gun Ruby Berry, also from Margaret River, won the Murray Smith Junior Surfer of the Year for winning two 10,000-rated events and is currently the top ranked under 18’s prospect in the country.
