Amazon shuts down Freevee after 5 years

Amazon’s ad-supported video on demand service, Freevee, is shutting down after five years of operation. This comes after rumors were squashed of this very thing.

Deadline reports the service is getting “phased out,” but this doesn’t mean the end of the core of the service. It seems the service’s content, which has largely already been migrated to Prime Video, will remain free for non-Prime subscribers, though new episodes are a different story, it seems.

Discussions surrounding Freevee’s future largely stemmed from the introduction of ads into Prime Video, which at the time was the biggest difference between the two, but with the service dabbling in the ad-supported model, it just made no sense as to why Amazon would keep both services and funding new shows for both.

Prime Video has been on an upswing with content, especially as it continues to produce top-notch TV adaptations of video games, like Fallout, which has a second season on the way, and the upcoming God of War series.
