Nintendo Switch 2 Can Really Stick it Up to PlayStation and Xbox With 1 Next Gen Console Design

For better or worse, the console war between PlayStation and Xbox has pushed the boundaries of innovations with its tech advancement and gaming experiences. While Nintendo has continued to innovate, it’s becoming evident that the original Switch is beginning to show its age. Enter the Switch 2, an array of hope amidst various leaks and rumors.

Over the years, it’s become clear that Nintendo always aims for innovation over conventional design. But what if this time it does not? By integrating a design and ergonomic feel similar to the PlayStation’s DualSense or Xbox controller, Switch 2 could tap into a global phenomenon that has shaped gamers’ expectations worldwide.

The PlayStation and Xbox controllers have set the standard for comfort, functionality, and aesthetic appeal. So much so that even third-party controller makers are drawing inspiration from their designs, highlighting the profound impact these controllers have had on gamers.

While some may view this strategy as “petty,” by subtly adapting successful design elements from competitors, Nintendo could create a controller that not only stands out in its own right but also feels instantly recognizable and comfortable for gamers to use.

With speculations, rumors, and leaks circulating the internet like wildfire, it has set the expectation that Switch 2 is going to set the standard for handheld devices. And what better way to do that than to take inspiration from the current standards for controllers and improve on their elements?

For those who might find this idea ridiculous, arguing that Nintendo doesn’t need to copy from its competitors as it already creates great and unique controllers, this is not about copying but rather about smart adaptation and innovation. We often forget that the beauty of design lies in the small details.

As far as adaptation is concerned, (if it takes inspiration) Switch 2 is not the only one taking inspiration. Sony also released its PlayStation Portal (on November 15th, 2023) which has taken the gaming community by storm. It looks similar to Switch but with a better screen and a DualSense controller attached to the sides.

Switch 2’s controller could easily tweak various elements of Sony and Microsoft’s controllers, such as the shape to adapt to the handheld, changing button arrangement, or even the materials used (for sticks or buttons). These small changes will enable the company to create a unique controller that feels familiar yet original.

The Wait for Nintendo Switch 2 Continues

At this point, it feels like an eternity has passed since the leaks and rumors started floating about the Switch 2. Nintendo has been keeping its lips shut tight and not giving any information about the upcoming console (not even its name is clear).

The leaks, rumors, and various patent filings dug up by the community have given few hints about what the successor of the Switch will look like or what changes it will bring. But since these are still leaks and rumors, so they should be taken with a grain of salt.

As far as the matter of sticking up to Sony and Microsoft goes, it is highly unlikely that Nintendo will fully abandon its innovative ethos. However, there is always some room to make some thoughtful adaptations. By embracing the successful and popular design elements, it could prove to be a game-changer for fans.

In the end, the wait for the Switch 2 is still on but players are hoping that the final product is worth the wait even if it has to adopt some elements from its competitors.
