West Coast Eagles draftee Lucca Grego reveals how rugby league icons Craig Bellamy, Cameron Smith shaped him

There aren’t many AFL players who can say they were regularly learning from rugby league icons Craig Bellamy and Cameron Smith as youngsters, but West Coast draftee Lucca Grego hasn’t had a normal sporting life.

The defender grew up playing rugby league in Queensland but his dad James then worked as a development coach for Melbourne Storm’s under 19 and under 21’s teams. Passionate and determined, Grego spent plenty of time around the Storm’s clubrooms and said it transformed his ability to understand what would be required to become a professional athlete.

“One hundred per cent it did,” he said.

“Being around that environment with Craig Bellamy, Cameron Smith and Cameron Munster definitely took my professionalism and my experiences to the next level. Being around that at a young age has really helped me.

“They’re some very big names. They said put everything out there, don’t be shy, have a bit of a laugh and enjoy your experiences because it doesn’t last very long so enjoy it.”

Grego committed to being a footballer during COVID, mindful that he’d most likely have to move to Queensland if he pursued rugby league.

Rugby league’s loss was AFL’s gain as he became co-captain of Victorian under 18 team Western Jets. He remains a no-nonsense type of player and person, and the hard-nosed approach he used in rugby league turned him into a damaging defender who loves the physical side of the game.

“It definitely helps. Not many people realise how big the translation between both codes are. It helps with my competitive edge and my toughness. It helps hitting people. I love it,” he said.

“Head down, bum up, get to work. I don’t like to mess around very often. I’m a very black and white straight shooter. I’m very competitive and a very hard worker.

“I want to put my name up for selection as soon as possible. I’m training hard, recovering harder and trying to get my name out there.”

Grego has moved in with small forward Jamie Cripps and revealed he’d been hoping the Eagles would call out his name on draft night.

He got his wish at pick 48 and said moving to Perth suited his way of life.

“It’s the lifestyle here and the beaches,” he explained.

“I’m really big on my four-wheel driving. I’m really keen to hit the Kimberleys and the beaches. And it’s great weather. It’s a lot better than Melbourne weather.”
