Nintendo Switch 2 Could Face Stiff Competition From Samsung Who Plans to Enter the Handheld Market With a Revolutionary Feature
The Nintendo Switch 2 is just around the corner. Fans have been waiting for long to witness the worthy successor of the long-hailed console from Nintendo. Excitements reached new heights when the company gave us an estimated release date after officially confirming the handheld’s existence.
However, it seems the upcoming console might find itself in fierce competition. Samsung, one of the biggest manufacturers of electronics, may be developing a portable gaming console of its own. According to a recently found patent, this console might have cutting-edge technology used by Samsung in its Galaxy Fold and Flip smartphones.
Samsung Filed a Patent for Foldable Skins
As reported by 91Mobiles, The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) received a patent application from Samsung Display Co. for an “ornamental design for electronic games console.” Several technical drawings of the device’s design are included in the patent; when laid flat, it resembles a Nintendo Switch quite a bit.
The gadget appears to fold in half, though, which makes it special. The device is not as tall as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold, so when it is closed, it resembles a Samsung Galaxy Z Flip.
Samsung hasn’t hinted at creating a handheld gaming device outside of this patent. It’s also important to keep in mind that this patent was first submitted in 2022, so by now the design might have been revised, postponed, or even abandoned.
Although the design has arguably improved with each iteration, Samsung folding screen phone users have occasionally complained about issues with the hinges, a key part of the folding screen design. Since game consoles are frequently abused by younger users, that might affect the company’s interest in creating one.
Nintendo Switch 2 Might Have Got a Competitor
The upcoming time might not be as smooth as it was supposed to be for Nintendo – at first, the proposed policies from Donald Trump, and now this rumored console from Samsung. Although there used to be several companies with rival handheld gaming consoles, their popularity appeared to decline for a while after the release of smartphones with cutting-edge technology and free apps.
For a while, the Nintendo Switch was the only widely used portable gaming device, but more recent models like the Steam Deck, ASUS ROG Ally, and of course, the PlayStation Portal have joined the market. Based on this patent, it appears that Samsung may see a future in portable gaming.
The idea of Samsung creating a handheld like this has some noteworthy benefits as well. By preventing screen scratches, a folding screen would help shield the device while it is being transported.
Additionally, it would be easier to carry around and more portable. Although the Nintendo Switch is relatively thin and light, it is also wide, making it difficult to pocket like the DS series of devices.
Is this a new beginning for Samsung?
