Marvel Rivals Devs Name-Drop 6 Heroes That Were the Hardest to Bring to the Game
Marvel Rivals is a full-fledged hero-shooter title. It is difficult to break specifically into that market because of fierce competition from games like Overwatch and Valorant, which makes it harder for even the most promising games to get a following. However, NetEase Games hopes to change that with Marvel Rivals.
The fact that the upcoming free-to-play multiplayer game is linked to a hugely popular licensed property is obviously beneficial, but from what we’ve seen so far, the game itself also appears to be getting better. However, there was a great challenge that the developers had to overcome to make it a reality.
6 Heroes Were Pretty Hard to Bring in Marvel Rivals
Whenever you are making a PvP shooter, the main concern will always be maintaining a balance in the character roster. It can be difficult to strike a balance between players’ enjoyment and competitiveness, especially when considering the variety of skills that Marvel characters possess—from the fantastical to the realistic.
These skills can be difficult to translate into gameplay in terms of balance and realism. But the development company of the game had risen to the occasion. About these challenges, this is what the development team of Marvel Rivals stated (via GamingBolt):
Although each has special skills, a major design challenge was their mutual emphasis on close combat. Because it’s a team-based combat game, if these melee dynamics are handled poorly, battles may become chaotic, shallow, and less fun.
According to the team, the company placed a high priority on accurately emulating the heroes’ abilities to improve player immersion, even though preserving competitive balance is essential.
How Did NetEase Games Overcome the Challenge?
Marvel‘s characters’ vast range of abilities gave the developers lots of chances to experiment and make use of them. The Hulk, for example, is a foe of airborne heroes because NetEase has modeled and recreated his incredible leaping ability, which allows him to knock flying opponents out of the sky and gives his fighting style a distinct element.
In addition to his primary melee focus, Venom’s symbiote traits have been expanded to provide mid-range combat capabilities. Similarly, Spider-Man’s agility has been fully exploited, allowing for fluid combat at close and long range, allowing players to modify their fighting style according to the needs of the fight.
This method guarantees an interesting gameplay experience and makes every character feel mechanically developed.
