Cold-weather shelter to open in Panama City on Sunday ahead of freeze. Here’s what to know
PANAMA CITY — Several organizations in conjunction with Bay County Emergency Services will open a warming shelter on Sunday ahead of an anticipated freeze.
The A.D. Harris Learning Village at 819 E. 11th St. in Panama City will stay open as many evenings as is necessary for the next week.
The shelter will be open at 6 p.m. each evening and remain open until 11 a.m. the following morning. The notice from AlertBay said accommodations can be made if freezing temperatures extend outside of these hours.
Those needing transportation to the shelter can contact BayWay Transit at 850-867-8698 between 2 and 8 p.m. Starting Monday, routes 2 and 4 will be available for transportation to the shelter.
The transit service will provide rides to the shelter at no-cost. However, all other rides will continue to operate on normal fares.
Those looking to stay at the shelter can show up after 6 p.m. each evening, but must register upon arrival. AlertBay said the shelter is intended for people who are homeless or who cannot maintain heat in their homes, who can care for themselves, and who are not at risk to themselves or others.
Anyone disoriented, under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or unable to walk unaided will not be allowed in. They do not permit alcohol, drugs, drug paraphernalia, guns or weapons. The shelter also cannot take pets, but can connect arrivals with Bay County Animal Control for arrangements.
The shelter is in need of volunteers, who can sign up online.
