WA cyclone: West Aussies being told to expect wild weather as cyclone develops off Pilbara coast

West Aussies are being told to brace for wild weather as a tropical cyclone develops off the coast.

A tropical low sitting off the Pilbara is expected to develop into a tropical cyclone on Sunday.

While it’s not expected to cross the coast, the Bureau of Meteorology said it will intensify into a category 3 cyclone by Monday and be close enough to land to cause a significant impact on weather in the State’s north.

“A tropical low north of the Pilbara coast is expected to develop into a tropical cyclone on Sunday,”the BoM said.

“The developing low is expected to move west, parallel to the Pilbara coast (on Saturday) and on Sunday.

“From Monday, the cyclone is expected to be moving southwest and away from the WA coast.”

Damaging wind gusts may develop in communities between De Grey and Dampier including Port Hedland, Karratha and Dampier from early Sunday morning.

Large waves are also expected to cause minor flooding in areas between De Grey and Exmouth during Sunday and Monday.

Pilbara Ports have closed the Port of Port Hedland and confirmed all port inner anchorages are to leave by 6pm Saturday.

Emergency WA have urged people in northern WA communities to start preparing for dangerous weather by following the below:

Review your cyclone plan and home maintenance, and make sure everyone in your household knows what to do.Check your emergency kit has key items like a first aid kit and an AM/FM radio that runs off batteries.Don’t go out on the water when a cyclone is forecast, as conditions can change rapidly and without notice. Secure your boat in a safe location to reduce the risk of damage.
