Man in Charlotte-area lake yelled for help, dies after police rescue attempt, CMPD says
A man died at a hospital after Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers heard him yelling for help in Lake Wylie and rescued him early Saturday, CMPD said.
Two officers who also were hospitalized were later released, according to a CMPD news release.
Just after 12:30 a.m., officers heard the man after finding a car in the 11200 block of Windy Grove Road whose driver had sped away from them, police said.
Police had tried to stop the driver nearby in the 9500 block of Walkers Ferry Road when the driver took off, according to the police statement.
Police haven’t said why they were trying to stop the driver or if the driver was the same man they heard in the lake.
After rescuing the man, officers “began life-saving efforts” before MEDIC took the man to a nearby hospital, CMPD said.
Police said they don’t know what caused the man’s death.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers rescued a man heard calling for help in this area of Lake Wylie early Saturday, Jan. 18, 2025. He died at a hospital of unknown cause, police said.
CMPD’s Internal Affairs division is conducting a parallel internal investigation into the officers’ actions, which is standard when a death is involved.
Police urged anyone with information about the incident to call homicide Detective Jean Moran at 704-432-8477 or the Crime Stoppers anonymous tips line at 704-334-1600.
