Here’s what you need to know for this weekend, including when it will snow, how much it will snow and what will follow the storm.

Weather on Sunday: When will it snow?

Timeline

On Sunday, a secondary area of low pressure is looking more and more likely to develop and move up the East Coast, bringing snow with it.

According to the National Weather Service, snow is likely after 1 p.m. Clouds will increase throughout the day, with a high near 36:

Sunday morning: A wintry mix should start falling around 6 a.m.

Sunday afternoon: By 3 or 4 p.m., the wintry mix should turn fully into snow.

Sunday night: Snow is still falling by 10 p.m., but the storm should exit the area around 1 a.m.

What they’re saying

“Snow is expected to begin on Sunday morning across Virginia and into the DelMarVa, progress north along the I-95 corridor throughout the day on Sunday, then reach southern New England Sunday evening,” the NOAA NWS Weather Prediction Center said in a Facebook post.

This same weather pattern is causing President-elect Donald Trump to move his inauguration indoors.

The heaviest snow from the storm is expected between the “greater Washington DC metropolitan area and Boston with 3-6 inches of snowfall possible.”

What they’re saying

“The placement of this and the strength of this will make all the difference for all the snow,” FOX Weather Meteorologist Britta Merwin said. “When you have an area of low pressure that’s right off the coast, usually we get this very thin band on the backside where we can have this intense impulse of snow. If that lines up with the 95 corridor, we could see some of the highest snow totals of snow from this system, on the 95 corridor.”

What we don’t know

The exact amount of snow will depend on how the two storm systems that will move through the Northeast this weekend interact.

“Above normal uncertainty remains regarding the timing and location of the swath of accumulating snow, which will be important in determining where the most significant impacts occur,” the NOAA NWS Weather Prediction Center said in a Facebook post.

Polar vortex January 2025

What’s next

A polar vortex will send temperatures tumbling below freezing in New York City next week. The FOX Forecast Center said a lobe of the polar vortex will dip to the south and move into the Tri-State area.

According to the National Weather Service, Tuesday in New York City will see a high near 18. Wednesday will see similar conditions. The FOX Forecast Center said temperatures will plummet as much as 45 degrees below average in spots.

Preparations for the cold weather are already underway. According to New York City Emergency Management, a Cold Weather Alert has been issued and the New York City Department of Public Health declared a Cold Blue.

“Outreach teams will canvass all five boroughs to connect our most vulnerable New Yorkers to shelters,” NYCEM said on X. “No one who is homeless and seeking shelter in New York City during a Code Blue will be denied.”

Monthly temperatures are already running 5-10 degrees below average, and the FOX Forecast Center said this will all but ensure many locations in the eastern U.S. will see their coldest January in years.
