Prince sees Villa lose to Monaco in Champions League

Wilfried Singo’s eighth-minute goal has helped Monaco edge Aston Villa 1-0 in the Principality, disappointing the visitors’ royal fan and leaving both clubs sweating on automatic qualification in the Champions League with one more game to play.

Each have 13 points and are likely to need to win their final match.

Atalanta moved up to a provisional third with 14 points ahead of matches later on Tuesday night with a 5-0 home romp over Sturm Graz, who are now eliminated.

Villa were watched by their most famous supporter, British heir to the throne Prince William.

Singo headed in from close range after Emiliano Martinez had initially done well to keep out Thilo Kehrer’s header following an early corner.

Villa were subsequently denied by Monaco goalkeeper Radoslaw Majecki, notably Leon Bailey and Ollie Watkins, but could also have conceded again.

Television cameras captured the prince in the crowd, looking cold as he wore a blue jacket and a grey sweater over blue shirt.

Earlier in the day Villa agreed a deal to sell Brazilian defender Diego Carlos to Turkish club Fenerbahce.

Europa League winners Atalanta went ahead in Bergamo thanks to Mateo Retegui’s goal on 12 minutes.

The Italian side had a goal ruled out for offside early in the second half and Ademola Lookman had two good chances.

Mario Pasalic then just avoided the offside flag when he turned in a cross from close range for 2-0 and Belgian Charles De Ketelaere toe-poked the third on 63 minutes.

Lookman eventually got his goal with an easy header and then produced a superb assist as Marco Brescianini completed the rout in stoppage time.
