Sony Has Bet Heavily on 1 Upcoming 2025 Soulslike That Has Devs Who’ve Only Worked In Mobile Gaming

Let’s be honest here, Sony’s position in the gaming industry is kind of wacky right now. However, among all the drama, it managed to take home The Game of the Year 2024 award with Astro Bot and managed to win the hearts and minds of many gamers.

However, the Japanese company took a massive hit with the failure of Concord, alongside its PSN controversies and PS5 Pro release. For 2025, it seems like Sony is banking upon the release of a new Soulslike, but it might backfire, considering the game’s developers have only worked in the mobile gaming sphere before.

Sony’s next big hope is Phantom Blaze Zero

Last year’s Summer Game Fest had absolutely no shortage of game announcements from a variety of beloved franchises. It was, therefore, quite a surprise that the most eye-catching title, Phantom Blade Zero, came from an unknown Beijing-based developer called S-GAME.

If you’re unaware, Phantom Blade Zero is an exciting, action-packed title that does the hard job of blending Chinese martial arts with a gothic punk twist.

Just like Black Myth Wukong and Stellar Blade, it’s going to feature fast-paced combat and gameplay that’ll remind you of traditional Wuxia films. What’s really interesting is its Souslike elements that are set in an open world with dark and mythical aspects.

In an interview with VentureBeat, the game’s creator, Soulflame Liang, opened up about the project and explained how long the S-GAME has been working on Phantom Blade Zero. However, what has caught everyone’s attention is the studio’s past history with gaming.

We’ve been officially working on it for about two years. Before this we mainly did mobile games. We’ve been developing mobile games in the Chinese market for more than 10 years.

It’s quite clear that this game is the biggest project in S-GAME’s history, as they’ve only worked on two smaller projects before, one for mobile and PC. Despite S-GAME’s inexperience, the fast-paced samurai action we can see in all Phantom Blade Zero gameplay trailers looks genuinely fantastic.

While it’s great to see that Sony has placed its trust in S-GAME, it’s crucial to be careful. Even the minds behind The Day Before, Fntastic, projected its game as a revolutionary survival horror extraction shooter despite the studio only having experience with small games before. However, it all came crashing down in the end, as the title was a disaster.

When is Phantom Blade Zero coming out?

Phantom Blade Zero is one of the most anticipated titles of this year. Considering Sony’s faith in S-GAME, players believe it’s going to be a generational hit and can’t wait to dig into it. While we still don’t have a release date, S-GAME has promised to reveal one soon.

S-GAME has revealed a brand-new gameplay trailer for Phantom Blade Zero. Celebrating the Chinese Year of the Snake, the new trailer gives us a look at the twin snake swords, with the hero, Soul, fighting against hordes of enemies and bosses.

The trailer gives us a look at a number of serpent-themed weapons and captures the intensity of what we can expect from the game. However, the best part comes right at the end, as S-GAME has finally confirmed that the release date will be revealed in 2025.

Gamers have been waiting for ages for Phantom Blade Zero, so hopefully, the game isn’t that far away from hitting shelves now.

With that said, do you think Sony’s bet with this brand-new Souslike game will pay out? Let us know in the comments below.
