Disney Cruise Line raises gratuity rates. Here’s how much they cost.
Disney Cruise Line passengers may find their next sailing costs more.
The cruise line raised its recommended gratuity rates this week. The base rate is now $16 per person each day, according to Disney’s website, up from $14.50. Guests in concierge staterooms and suites, meanwhile, will pay $27.25 per person each day, up from $23.50.
The changes took effect on Wednesday.
The gratuities – which can be pre-paid – are distributed among a range of crew members, including dining room servers and stateroom hosts. “It is customary to give gratuities in recognition of exceptional service, which you’ll receive in abundance aboard the ship,” the line’s website reads.
If passengers do not pay ahead of time, the charges will be automatically added to their onboard accounts. Those who want to adjust or remove the gratuities can visit Guest Services on board.
Disney last updated those recommended amounts in July 2022, and is not the only cruise line to do so in recent months. Royal Caribbean International raised its gratuity rates in November.
Cruise lines typically hike those fees in reaction to “external influences” such as inflation or changes in economic activity, according to Danny Genung, CEO of travel agency Harr Travel.
“You look at the cost of hotels and transportation, fuel and food and everything else, and I think it’s really just a normal response,” previously told USA TODAY. “You know, compensating employees, offsetting costs that have increased.”
