Roswell police officer rams vehicle while responding to crash

Jan. 22—A 66-year-old man was killed after a Roswell police officer crashed into his car while responding to another call Wednesday morning.

The crash happened around 9:50 p.m. on North Main Street, according to a Roswell Police Department social media post.

The officer was heading south on North Main Street, responding to a two-vehicle crash with his lights and sirens on, when an Oldsmobile heading north driven by Howard Peterson made a left turn, taking it across the southbound lanes and “directly in front of the RPD unit,” resulting in the collision between Seventh and Sixth streets, police said.

Peterson died at a hospital. The officer was treated at a hospital and is expected to recover, police said.

The officer has been with RPD for five years, serving one year as a police service aide and the last four years as an officer, according to RPD.

An administrative investigation will be conducted to review the officer’s actions, police said.

“The Roswell Police Department sends our thoughts and prayers to the family of Mr. Peterson,” Police Chief Lance Bateman said in a statement. “This tragic crash will continue to be investigated by our Traffic Division and internally to make sure the officer involved was following department policies and procedures related to emergency operation of his department vehicle.”
