Emergency storm warning for Marble Bar with people urged to shelter indoors

People in the Pilbara have been urged to shelter indoors immediately due to a thunderstorm causing winds stronger than 100km/h.

The Bureau of Meteorology advised an isolated severe thunderstorm developed over Marble Bar just after 6pm, causing 113km/h winds.

The storm has prompted an emergency warning with the Department of Fire and Emergency Services urging people in Marble Bar and surrounds to shelter indoors.

People in the area are advised to keep away from windows, stay away from trees, powerlines, stormwater drains and streams, and floodwaters, and wear strong shoes in case of flooding.

Important documents and valuables should be kept out of the way in case of flash flooding.

Those driving are urged to pull over until the storm passes and park with hazard lights on until the rain clears.

Drivers should also be alert to hazards including fallen powerlines, branches, and loose debris as well as be careful driving on gravel roads as surfaces may be slippery and muddy.

The storm has left more than 60 homes without power.
