Morning snow shower snarls traffic on Interstate 65 in the Lafayette area

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Northbound lanes of Interstate 65 are still closed as of 1:30 p.m. Thursday near the Lafayette/Indiana 25 exit, according to Indiana State Police.

There are no fatalities in Tippecanoe County, Coroner Carrie Costello told the J&C.

Indiana State Police Sgt. Jeremy Piers said the crashes stretch from Clinton County past the Indiana 18 exit in White County. There are no fatalities, he confirmed, noting that all of the crashes so far are in the northbound lanes.

The accident at the Indiana 25 exit happened when a semi slowed down and the rig behind him rear-ended the semi, Piers said. A third semi saw the wreck and moved to another lane to avoid the accident, but a fourth semi sideswiped semi No. 3 and rear-ended semi No. 2, Piers said.

Names or other details of the drivers were not available at 1:30 p.m.

The semi pile-up is between the on and off ramps. Therefore, troopers are diverting northbound traffic off the interstate at the Indiana 25 exit and then back onto the interstate at the same exit, Piers said.

Two people were injured and taken to Lafayette-area hospitals, Piers said. A third person might have suffered minor injuries, he said.

There is at least one person trapped inside a vehicle in the crash at the I-65/Indiana 25 accidents scene, Piers said. It is not known whether there are injuries in that crash, he said.

As for the other crashes, Piers, who is working on the interstate, is not sure about injuries at the other locations.

Piers suggested motorists avoid northbound I-65.

An Indiana Department of Transportation camera at the Interstate 65 and Indiana 25 exit shows the extent of the snarled traffic. This photo was time-stamped as 12:14 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, 2025.
