Fatal wrong-way crash on I-270 kills one, injures two

ST . LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – An Austin, TX man is dead and two others are seriously injured overnight Wednesday morning after a fatal wrong-way crash on Interstate 270 to Interstate 55 in south St. Louis County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP), the fatal crash happened a little after 12 a.m. on the southbound I-270 ramp to I-55, involving a Chevrolet Silverado and a Volkswagen Passat.

MSHP officials say the crash happened after the Silverado was traveling on the wrong side of the road, traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of I-270. The Passat was traveling southbound on I-270 in the correct direction before the Silverado struck the vehicle head-on, according to MSHP.

The driver of the Silverado, a 31-year-old man from Austin, TX, was transported to a nearby hospital but later succumbed to his injuries. The passenger in the Silverado and the driver of the Passat were also transported to a nearby hospital for treatment, with both suffering from serious injuries.

Both drivers involved in the accident were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash, according to MSHP. It is unknown if the passenger in the Silverado was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
