Ellie’s Unexpected Death in The Last of Us 2 Cut Scene Will Catch You by Surprise

It has been a while since The Last of Us: Part 2 came out, and players are surprised how a glitch in the game has still not been patched yet, causing them to die in the middle of a cut scene. As many on social media platforms pointed out, during a particular moment in the game, the character model somehow bugs out, causing Ellie to phase through the floor and fall into the void.

It has also been pointed out how the glitch seems to happen only in the permadeath mode, making players start their journey all over again as the custom mode allows the players only a single chance to finish the game if they have chosen the hardest difficulty, resetting their progress all over again if they die.

TLoU 2 was a much-anticipated title that many fans were patiently waiting for after the first game became a huge hit. While the game’s ending has been controversial, it still significantly continues the storyline everyone had longed for.

The new glitch, as discussed before, manages to send the player through the floor, causing a great fall into the void and eventually the death of Ellie. More particularly, the issue seems to take place during the fourth chapter, Seattle Day 3, when Ellie is conversing with Dina, asking her to lock the doors after she leaves. The problem was also brought up by this user on Reddit, to which another player remarked “I’m surprised they haven’t patched the glitch“, showing their astonishment at the absence of the studio’s concern to fix the bug.

While glitches and bugs are recurring factors in video games, storylines are not. The ending of The Last of Us: Part 2 has always remained a matter of debate, with many players agreeing how it did not deliver a justified enough closure to the character of Ellie, especially after the events that occur in-game.

Joel's death in The Last of Us 2 game
The game originally had another ending planned initially

Neil Druckmann, the executive producer of The Last of Us video game series has revealed in the game’s commentary how the developers intended to have another ending for the game, way different from the one that fans got. In the final version, Ellie is shown to have a change of heart at the very last moment and lets Abby go despite having the clear opportunity to get rid of her once and for all. It is also what the players wanted, as many deemed it fit for Ellie to get her vengeance by killing the murderer of Joel.

Additionally, justifying the removal of the planned ending, co-writer Halley Gross has mentioned how killing Abby would have made Ellie lose the last bit of humanity that was left in her, ultimately losing the very kid that helped Joel shape himself over time. Letting the main antagonist live also helps open up the doors for future games, with the players anticipating her comeback in The Last of Us 3.
