A Day Trip to Mount Parnassos

Just 170 kilometers from Athens, Parnassos is a majestic escape that can be reached in under two hours, making it the perfect destination for a day of adventure. With its towering peak, Liakoura, rising to 2,457 meters, Parnassos is Greece’s eighth-highest mountain, offering a breathtaking blend of scenic trails and outdoor pursuits that will captivate nature enthusiasts. A place where history, mythology, and adventure converge, Parnassos is steeped in ancient lore, from its association with the Muses to its role in the Greek War of Independence. The mountain also played a pivotal role in the rise of ski tourism in Greece, adding an element of thrill to its storied past.

While Arachova is the largest village in the area, known for its lively atmosphere and numerous dining and coffee options, the lesser-known villages on Parnassos’ northern slopes have their own distinct charm and character.

Morning Stop: A Stroll Through Arachova

Begin your journey with a brief stop in Arachova for a coffee and a leisurely walk. Shops on the main street offer local specialties such as hilopites (traditional pasta), formaela cheese, handwoven textiles, and souvenirs. Bonjour (Platia Lakkas, Tel. (+30) 22670.323.30) in the town center serves coffee, breakfast, and brunch starting early in the morning.

Into the Heart of the Mountain

From Arachova, follow the road toward the ski resort, passing through the charming village of Livadi, where a scattering of hotels and taverns beckon with warm hospitality. Even if there’s no snow and the ski slopes are closed, the drive is worth it for the serene, picturesque landscapes.

Continue towards the villages on Parnassos’s northern side. The 26-kilometer drive from the ski center to the village of Eptalofos (formerly known as Agoriani) is a mesmerizing journey through dense fir forests and winding roads. A little trail from Eptalofos’ village square leads to a waterfall, which is only a five-minute walk and well worth it.

Lunch and Exploration in Vargiani

From Eptalofos, take the scenic 29-kilometer drive to the village of Vargiani, passing through the settlements of Lilaia, Mariolata, and Gravia. Located at 900 meters, Vargiani is a traditional village known for its numerous springs, flowing waters, and impressive stone-built homes. Zervas Taverna (Vargiani, Tel. (+30) 693.699.9380), on the main square, serves delicious grilled meats, homemade pies, and flavorful stews.

The Journey Back

With Amfissa located about 30 kilometers from Vargiani, you have two main options for your return journey. The western route, passing through Amfissa and then Arachova, covers a total distance of 233 kilometers. Alternatively, the eastern route via Amfiklia is shorter, at 202 kilometers.

If you pass through Amfissa, stop for a coffee at one of the most atmospheric cafés in Greece, Megalo Kafeneio 1929 (Kechagia Square, Amfissa, Tel. (+30) 694.824.5729). If you take the Amfiklia route, Village Café (Amfiklia, Tel. (+30) 22340.230.52) is known for its excellent coffee.
