A man thought he was shooting a burglar, Erie police say. It was his cousin

An Erie man told city police he mistakenly took a cousin who entered his home on Friday evening as a burglar and fired a gunshot at him.

The cousin was struck in the arm and abdomen and underwent immediate surgery, investigators reported.

The accused shooter, Marquel A. Duck, 24, is facing aggravated assault and other charges in the shooting, which was reported shortly after 7:30 p.m. Friday when Erie police were sent to UPMC Hamot to investigate a report of a walk-in gunshot victim. Duck drove the 19-year-old male victim to the hospital, according to police.

Duck admitted to shooting his cousin inside his East Avenue residence out of fear that a burglar had entered his home, investigators wrote in Duck’s criminal complaint.

Updated information on the shooting victim’s condition was not available Monday morning.

There have been 11 people shot in Erie so far this year, according to police.
