AFL grand final 2024: Brisbane Lions sing Country Road as Charlie Cameron lines up for goal during training

Thousands of passionate Brisbane fans have belted out Country Road while Charlie Cameron was taking set shots at goal during the Lions’ final training session at the MCG before Saturday’s grand final.

There was a festive atmosphere as the lower level of the Warne stand was packed with Brisbane supporters.

They sang the songs which play at the Gabba after their heroes kick goals during home games and the Lions soaked up the adulation, waving and giving thumbs up signals during the short session.

Coach Chris Fagan was at his theatrical best as he laid out the cones on the field as the players warmed up.

The crowd roared every time he dropped a cone onto the ground, so Fagan slowly lowered his hand to the MCG surface, then raised the cone back up before dropping it in place to receive the massive roar.

Captain Lachie Neale ran to the fence at the end of training to pose for photos and several of the club’s premiership players from 2001-03, including Jason Akermanis, Ash McGrath and Darryl White were boundary side to support the team.

Triple Richmond premiership captain Trent Cotchin spent time speaking with Fagan as part of his leadership role at the club this season.

While the mood was filled with excitement, the business side of things became clear when the midfielders and leaders were summoned to the centre circle. They remained there for an extended time in heavy discussions with coaching staff in a moment which could define the way they play against Sydney on Saturday.

The Lions lost last year’s grand final in a thrilling game against Collingwood, had a poor start to this season but hit form in the second half of the year and are now one win away from winning their first premiership since 2003.
