AFL Trades: Western Bulldog Bailey Smith nominates Geelong as club of choice for trade

Western Bulldogs midfielder Bailey Smith appears to have finally locked in the club he wants to play for next season, exchanging the kennel for the Cattery.

Smith has been rumoured to desire a move away from the Dogs for much of the season, and the club confirmed his trade request last month, but reports emerged on Wednesday the 23-year-old had nominated his club of choice.

An ACL injury during the pre-season wiped out the former No.7 draft selection’s 2024 season, and after 103 games, his time at the Bulldogs looks over.

Geelong, who made the preliminary final where they were beaten by eventual premiers Brisbane, currently hold picks 15, 35, 53 and 71 in this year’s Draft and will likely need to part with at least one to get Smith across.

The midfielder has also been linked to Geelong, Collingwood and Hawthorn as potential destinations should the Cats be unable to orchestrate a trade.

The Bulldogs said in a statement in September the club would ensure they were “fairly compensated” in any deal to move Smith on.

“Given Bailey’s immense talent, age and proven ability to influence games, the club will work diligently to ensure it is fairly compensated throughout the process,” the statement read.

Smith is a four-time 22-under-22 team member and averaged 23.5 disposals, 3.6 inside-50s and 3.5 clearances across 19 games in 2023.
