After Apex Legends 2.0, Rainbow Six Siege X Rumors Spark Buzz Despite No Release Date

EA and Respawn just took the Apex Legends community by storm when they revealed that big changes are coming, and it may be Apex Legends 2.0. It seems like Ubisoft is also joining the trend because there are new leaks saying that Rainbow Six Siege is about to also get a 2.0 update titled Rainbow Six Siege X.

While there’s no official release date, multiple reports suggest Ubisoft is planning a Counter-Strike 2-style overhaul rather than a full-fledged sequel. With the game nearing its 10th anniversary we are very due for an upgrade so let’s see what the developers are cooking up. Will we get a new game engine, graphical improvements, free to play?

Since its 2015 release, Rainbow Six Siege has grown into one of Ubisoft’s most-played games, with nearly 100 million registered players. The game struggled initially but found success through a steady stream of content updates, new operators, and its esports scene. A decade later, it may be time for some big upgrades! And we’re ready.

According to leaker FraxisWinning, who has a solid track record with Ubisoft leaks, Rainbow Six Siege X will be announced during the Six Invitational 2025, scheduled from February 14 to 16. Instead of a sequel, we can expect to see a focus on modernizing the game’s engine and visuals, much like Counter-Strike 2 did for CS:GO.

One reason why we’d love to see this is Siege’s aging infrastructure. Despite Ubisoft’s consistent updates, the game wasn’t originally built to last a full decade. The game nears its 10th anniversary and the company seems to be leaning toward an Overwatch 2-style update rather than an entirely new game.

What kind of upgrades and changes could we see?

A major talking point is whether Siege X will transition to a free-to-play model. Given Ubisoft’s push toward live-service monetization, making Siege X free could be a logical move to attract new players. A similar approach was taken with Apex Legends, which sustained player interest through seasonal content and microtransactions.

Ubisoft previously stated that a Siege sequel was unlikely, with creative director Alexander Karpazis arguing that the game’s technology was continuously evolving. However, with the rumored shift to Siege X, it appears Ubisoft may have reconsidered its stance.

The rumored Siege X update shares similarities with EA’s approach to Apex Legends 2.0. Instead of creating a full sequel, EA is focusing on revitalizing Apex with a large-scale update after Battlefield 6 launches. The company previously dismissed the idea of a full sequel, stating that live-service games often struggle when transitioning to a second version.

We can also be worried about how Siege X will impact its competitive ecosystem. With Siege being a staple in esports for years, any big overhaul could require a transition period for professional players. Valve has done a pretty decent job with CS2 so let’s hope the same is true here.
