After Conquering Action Genre With John Wick, Lionsgate Set to Dominate Horror With ‘Outlast’ Movie

Outlast is one of the most horrific psychological survival gaming franchises of all time. This series by Red Barrels first made its debut in the gaming world in 2013. The series centers on Miles Upshur, a freelance investigative journalist who chooses to look into Mount Massive Asylum, a remote mental health facility tucked away in the mountains of Lake County, Colorado.

The first game was a huge hit; hence, the series went on to prolong itself with three more titles. However, just like any other gaming franchise, there were huge demands for an on-screen adaptation of this series. Now, the John Wick and SAW famed company might have heard these demands.

As reported by Bloody Disgusting, Red Barrels, one of the most significant video game developers in the horror genre, and Lionsgate, the studio behind the popular SAW and John Wick franchises, have announced an agreement to adapt the Outlast horror series for the big screen.

The adaptation will be directed by Roy Lee, a prolific horror film producer (It, Barbarian, Late Night with the Devil, Strange Darling). With over 37 million players worldwide, the critically acclaimed psychological horror game franchise has become a fan favorite. Lee will bring the same terrifying authenticity to the film.

The screenplay for the movie will be written by J.T. Petty (The Burrowers, Hellbenders), who is very involved with the plot of the games themselves. This is what Petty stated: “Red Barrels has been pushing the limits of horror in games for more than a decade, and expanding the Outlast Universe into film is an incredible opportunity to dive deeper into the characters and killers we love.”

The upcoming adaptation promises to be an immersive experience that captures the franchise’s signature elements—immersive atmosphere, chilling sound design, and relentless suspense. Roy Lee is pretty excited about the project:

When Outlast launched in 2013, it changed the landscape of horror gaming, setting a new standard for immersion in the genre. Its deep, emergent lore has provided a perfect foundation for creating a film that delves into the psychological and physical horrors at the core of the franchise. I’m excited to bring this unique world to life for both new viewers and the series’ dedicated fans.

The adaptation is in line with Lionsgate’s success and expertise in high-quality cinematic storytelling in the horror genre as the studio behind the SAW franchise, as well as the recent hits The Strangers: Chapter 1 and Imaginary, as well as many other hit films over the decades. Red Barrels is also known for pushing the boundaries of horror in gaming.

A recurrent theme of power abuse and manipulation, with corrupt institutions taking advantage of people for their own evil ends, lies beneath the psychological horror that characterizes each Outlast installment.

The Outlast movie represents a thrilling new phase in the franchise’s history, bringing it from the world of video games to the big screen.
