An Amazing Coincidence Between Astro Bot and God of War 2018 Is How We Already Know A PlayStation Exclusive Is Winning the Game of The Year 2024 Award
If we talk about the best games of 2024, then Astro Bot easily comes out among the top spots. This game is a sequel to the 2020 title, Astro’s Playroom, and overall the third game in the series. On the occasion of PlayStation’s 30th anniversary, this game has been released on September 6, 2024, on PS5.
After the release of this 3D platformer, fans have gone into an absolute frenzy. With the cute little character and aspects of many other PlayStation titles, this game has won everyone’s hearts. Interestingly, this new game shares an uncanny similarity with another Sony title of 2018. And with that, many fans have come to a similar conclusion.
Astro Bot and God of War – Both on the Same Score on Metacritic
God of War is one of the most successful titles on PlayStation. This game garnered a huge player base just after its release in 2018 and eventually went on to win the Game of the Year award, beating the likes of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Red Dead Redemption 2, Marvel’s Spider-Man, and many more.
Now this year’s Astro Bot has an interesting coincidence with that 2018 title-winning game. Both games have the same metascore on Metacritic, which is 94. And after seeing this striking similarity, fans have already started rooting for the PlayStation 5 exclusive platformer to win the Game of the Year in 2024.
The predecessor, Astro’s Playroom, was a free tech demo for the DualSense controller that was pre-installed on every PS5. Everyone was so happy seeing the game, Sony decided to bring a full-fledged title in Astro’s universe, and boom! The game is in contention to become the best game of this year.
Why Is Everybody Liking Astro Bot So Much?
The main reason for Astro Bot‘s huge reception is that this game features cameos from 150 classic PlayStation characters, including Ratchet & Clank, Ape Escape, and many more. The developers of Team Asobi obviously wanted Astro to break out of his playroom and get a bigger stage.
But the idea to bring in the classic and familiar PlayStation fun has done the job for them. In an interview with Variety, Asobi Studio Director Nicolas Doucet talked about the characters in the game:
If you asked me the question two years ago about how many we’re going to be able to put in — well, my job is to look at all the problems, so I tend to be pessimistic — where we landed in the end with these 150-plus characters, it’s been really surprising.
Doucet also stated that every owner of those IPs that are in the game showed positive appreciation and support to Team Asobi to include their characters. Even God of War director Cory Barlog approved the inclusion of Kratos in a cute bot version.
The game is set in the background of an incident where Astro’s DualSense Spaceship will be torn apart (in the form of PlayStation gaming equipment) as every piece will be scattered across the universe. Now, this cute, tiny character will embark on a journey to find all the pieces.
