As News Breaks of WB Discovery’s Intention to Licence Out It’s Biggest Franchises, Fans Want Batman to End Up Where He’ll Truly Be Understood, and It’s Not Rocksteady

Following the failure of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and several other games under WB Games, the company is considering a new strategy. According to a recent WB Discovery investor meeting, the video game division is looking to license major titles to avoid further financial losses.

Consequently, the company is contemplating permitting studios outside its group to develop titles such as Batman, Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, and others. Players were thrilled to hear this and suggested that studios like Insomniac take control of these characters.

WB Discovery Is Tired of Releasing Unsuccessful Games

Games like Gotham Knights or Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League have proven to fall short of fan expectations, and sales have reflected the lack of creativity in these titles.

For this reason, WB Discovery, the owner of all these franchises, is considering a significant strategy shift to boost its video game division’s sales. It appears these company franchises may have a brighter future.

The poor performance of the video game division, which revealed a 41% decrease in revenue compared to last year, came to light during an investor meeting. It appears the company has been unable to replicate the massive success of Hogwarts Legacy.

Despite having some of the most iconic characters in popular culture, their projects are not living up to fan expectations. Fans are keenly interested and have already suggested studios that would suit each character’s potential.

Many users on platforms like X recommended several successful studios that could create excellent adaptations of these popular characters, with most of the recommendations centered on DC Comics heroes.

One of the most popular suggestions for adapting a game, for example, featuring Superman was Insomniac Games, which has already developed three highly successful Spider-Man games and is now working on a Wolverine game.

This could significantly boost the potential of these characters, who have suffered from a series of subpar games with weak mechanics and poor execution.

Clearly, WB Discovery sees potential in this approach, and licensing their properties could be a spectacular business move for the company. The complete failure of Rocksteady’s latest game served as a catalyst for considering and testing this strategy.

One of the few licenses that continue to perform well in video games is the Mortal Kombat franchise, directed by Ed Boon and Netherrealm Studios, which continues to thrive with each new release.

Outside of that, most studios struggle to capitalize on the potential of these characters. Other major franchises like Star Wars, exclusively tied to EA for video game development until recently, have experienced this.
