Baldur’s Gate 3 Players Have Collectively Downloaded Over 50 Million Mods

Larian’s Baldur’s Gate 3 was a megahit for 2023, earning several Game of the Year awards including the top prize for GameSpot. While the game doesn’t need any mods to be played or even enhanced since the mainline story itself is so rich and elaborate, that didn’t stop players from downloading mods by the millions.

“Together, you’ve downloaded more than 50 million mods since Patch 7 introduced modding support,” the game’s official Twitter account posted Wednesday. “Apparently 10,000 of those downloads were you renaming Withers to Bone Daddy. So, uh, glad we could facilitate that.”

After months of playing with unofficial mods, Patch 7 of the game included, among other things, an official modding toolkit for Mac and console and quickly racked up over 15 million downloads. Players uploaded over 1,000 mods by the start of October. Larian even released an animated short for the announcement, showing the party getting into some chaotic situations.

Larian did have some caveats for the mods, though, explaining which ones get the seal of approval. “Only mods made with and uploaded using the Baldur’s Gate 3 Toolkit and which pass internal testing can be eligible for release on the console and Mac in-game mod browser,” it added. “Technical limitations on certain platforms mean that some PC mods will not be available for Mac or console. Our team will need to test all mods requested to be brought to these platforms to confirm whether they can be made available.”

The developer also suggested a few mods for players who want to dabble outside of their vanilla playthroughs including the Adjustable Party Limit (self-explanatory) and the Faces of Faerun (adds more alternative heads for Character Creation).
