Belmont incident: Detective Greg McDougall was ‘touch and go’ after being hit by car

The twin brother of a detective who was allegedly run over by a car during a targeted drug operation has described how it was “touch and go” at first but how the officer “always gave us the thumbs up” to assure his family that he would be OK.

Detective Greg McDougall, 46, was allegedly hit and briefly dragged underneath a Toyota HiLux after trying to approach the driver in Belmont on Friday.

Police later revealed a search of the car uncovered 1kg of methamphetamine — worth about $1 million.

In an interview on Monday, Chris McDougall — the officer’s twin brother — said the first thing his brother asked was if his colleagues had caught the suspect.

He said it “made his day” knowing that the alleged offender had been caught.

The brother said Det-Sen. Const McDougall had been through a “hell of a lot”.

“When we first found out we didn’t think of as as serious as it was, until we got to the hospital he was getting blood transfusions,” he said.

“It was touch and go on Friday night … that was our biggest concern.

“Getting through the night and then Saturday, once they got him stabilised, he seemed to get a lot better every time he woke up.

“He was just so strong, every every time we saw him, he always gave us the thumbs up. He’s just he’s so tough, and he’s Superman to most of the family.”

Mr McDougall said his brother’s recovery would take “three to six months”.

“His rehab is going to be really tough, but he’s got a long journey… he’s got the support of the family, immediate family, and also the blue family, the support that they have given us is second to none.”

More to come.
