Big Lots closing 26 stores in Florida. Here’s the full list.
Weeks after saying it would close as many as 40 stores by the end of the year, big box discount retailer Big Lots now says that the number of closings could reach 315.
The Columbus-based retailer – which operates 1,389 stores, including five in the Jacksonville area and another in St. Augustine – made the announcement in a July 31 Securities and Exchange Commission filing.
At least one Northeast Florida store is among 26 in the state slated to close.
According to Big Lots’ website, the chain’s Orange Park store at 700 Blanding Blvd., where liquidation sales have already begun, is closing. There, the store is offering discounts of up to 20% off.
Area stores remaining open include those at 9119 Merril Road, 9625 Crosshill Blvd., 9718 Old St. Augustine Road and 14333 Beach Blvd. in Jacksonville; and at 308 SR 312 in St. Augustine.
In a recent SEC filing, Big Lots said it could close more than 300 stores this year. In Florida, 26 locations are set to close.
Why are Big Lots closing?
In last week’s filing, Big Lots reported that sales in the first quarter of 2024, which ended in May, fell more than 10% compared to the previous year.
“In 2024, the U.S. economy has continued to face macroeconomic challenges including elevated inflation, which has adversely impacted the buying power of our customers,” Big Lots said in the filing.
