Both Todd Howard and Hidetaka Miyazaki Have the Same Approach to Open World Games
The experience of playing a video game remains the biggest selling point of any release. However, how that experience is delivered perfectly is something only renowned directors such as Todd Howard and Hidetaka Miyazaki have showcased so far, with both of them even following the same mindset when crafting an open-world experience.
Open-world games have redefined how players experience virtual worlds, offering great freedom and exploration. While both Howard and Miyazaki have different approaches to storytelling, they both happen to share a core philosophy.
Todd Howard reveals his directing beliefs
Games like Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim or Starfield and more made by Bethesda under the direction of Todd Howard offer the player rich, immersive worlds filled with secrets and possibilities.
This empowers players to choose their own paths in the vast world, as he believes in the idea that players should take the lead in crafting their own adventures, as revealed in an interview via Time.
I think in general it’s a positive thing. If someone’s playing the game and enjoying themselves, that’s all we want. I’m a believer that players are good self-directors, and I think one thing that’s good about video games is they can direct their own experience. As opposed to saying, “Here’s all of the beats that you must hit.” They know if they want action, or they want downtime, or they want to talk to characters.
Throughout Starfield and Skyrim, players can find different tools and opportunities throughout the entire plot line that help them take control of the game in a manner, proving why Todd Howard is one of the best in the business when it comes to crafting worlds.
Hidetaka Miyazaki and his first open-world, Elden Ring
There is no debate in saying Todd Howard and Hidetaka Miyazaki both have their own respective themes and core plots when it comes to designing and making a video game.
However, as said before, like Howard, even Miyazaki likes for the player to become their own director, something that can be seen thoroughly in his latest hit, Elden Ring, which was released in 2022 and has broken many records since.
It is also the very first open-world title that FromSoftware ever experimented with, which fortunately turned out to be a huge success for the better. While there don’t seem to be any plans by Miyazaki to introduce more open-world games soon, you can rest easy, as any experience curated by the mastermind himself will be worth shelling out a few bucks for.
