7NEWS chief AFL reporter Mitch Cleary first revealed Daniher was considering his future the night before the grand final and confirmed Daniher’s retirement on Thursday afternoon.

Daniher told teammates on Thursday before the club’s best and fairest award tonight.

The enigmatic 30-year-old kicked 2.4 in the Lions’ massive win over Sydney in the grand final.

His emotion spilled over in the last quarter when he kicked his second goal in the dying stages of the victory.

Daniher didn’t immediately address his future after the game, but made the decision now to retire.

He departs the game with 395 goals from 204 games with Brisbane and Essendon.

Daniher began his career at the Bombers after arriving at the club as a father-son selection in 2012.

He played 108 games for the club, but managed just 15 in his final three years due to crippling injuries.

Joining the Lions as a free agent ahead of the 2021 season, Daniher put the injury issues behind him and has barely missed a game.

He just completed arguably the best season of his career, which culminated in a stunning premiership.

More to come …
