Busy exit at Malfunction Junction to be closed for days. Here’s when it’s should to reopen

One of the busier exits in the area known as Malfunction Junction will be temporarily closed for construction, according to the South Carolina Department of Transportation.

The ramp for Exit 64B on Interstate 20 westbound, which guides traffic to Interstate 26 west heading toward Spartanburg, will be blocked beginning 11 p.m. on Friday, SCDOT said in a news release. That’s in a part of Columbia that’s close to the line between Richland and Lexington counties.

The ramp is scheduled to reopen by 5 a.m. on Monday, in time for the morning commute, according to the release.

The roadwork is part of Phase 2 of the Carolina Crossroads Project, SCDOT said.

An exit ramp at the junction of two major interstates in Columbia will be closed for construction.

As part of the closure, a detour will be put in place.

Drivers heading west on I-20 who want to use Exit 64B to I-26 Westbound, will instead use the clover leaf interchange by continuing along I-20 and taking Exit 64A onto I-26 east, according to the release. The drivers will then take Exit 107B onto I-20 east, then exit at 64B onto I-26 westbound, SCDOT said.

Message board signs will display detour directions.

The Carolina Crossroad Project is a five-phase construction project that will upgrade the travel hub connecting I-20, I-26, and I-126, and is scheduled to be completed in 2029.
