Call of Duty Dev Reveals Real Reason Black Ops 6 Campaign is Superior to Modern Warfare 3:”We had good opportunities to keep crafting”

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has just been released. After completing the Modern Warfare trilogy, Activision is now looking to revive its Black Ops series. The last game in the series, Black Ops Cold War, didn’t get a proper reception from the fans, which is why all the honors lay on the shoulders of the recently launched title.

However, things are not going very well for BO6, as the game is heavily criticized for the new movement mechanics and launch maps. Still, the game features one of the best campaign missions in franchise history, one department in which Modern Warfare 3 failed miserably. But what was the reason Activision pulled off this brilliance—that too in just one year?

What Was the Reason Behind the Superiority of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Campaign Than That of Modern Warfare 3?

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3‘s Campaign might be criticized the most in the whole franchise. A year later, Call of Duty players must contend with another campaign from the massive first-person shooter game, this time the Black Ops 6 campaign created by Raven Software.

So, what has changed? Jon Zuk, associate creative director at Raven Software, has told the real truth behind it in an interview with IGN:

The campaign… all game development is very fluid and we react to a lot of different things, but in the case of the previous game’s reception, we were already pretty locked in on the story we were telling and the missions we were creating. So we didn’t react to how that was received.

The campaign in 2023’s Modern Warfare 3 is arguably the worst received in Call of Duty history. Its Metacritic Metascore is 56, and its Steam user review rating is ‘mostly negative’.

Modern Warfare 3‘s single-player campaign is everything that a Call of Duty story mode shouldn’t be: underdeveloped, rehashed, and pieced together from multiplayer components.

The campaign for Modern Warfare 3, which was obviously hurried to market, combines poorly thought-out open spaces, unimpressive linear missions, and a pointless plot. All in all, it was somewhat of a catastrophe.

The Extra Development Time has Done the Trick for Black Ops 6

Time is one of the main distinctions between Treyarch’s Black Ops 6 and Sledgehammer Games’ Modern Warfare 3 developments. Originally intended to be an expansion pack for Modern Warfare 2, which came out in 2022, Modern Warfare 3 reportedly put a strain on its developers as they fought to produce a complete sequel in just 16 months.

Aaron Halon, the head of Sledgehammer Studios, has maintained that Modern Warfare 3 was “years in the making.” This is what Zuk had to say about the development period of the game:

The extra development time certainly gives us time to do a little bit more prototyping and a little bit more trying something out, finding out if it’s fun and if it works, and throwing some things away.

But compared to other mainline Call of Duty games, Black Ops 6 has had more time to develop. Since the release of Black Ops Cold War in 2020, Treyarch has been working on it for four years. Raven has also profited from this additional time for the campaign.
