Call of Duty was the US’s best-selling video game for the 16th year running

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 was the best-selling video game in the US last year, marking the series’ 16th successive annual number 1.

According to new data published by Circana for December 2024 and the entire year, Black Ops 6 was the best-selling game in the US in terms of dollar sales.

As such, according to Circana, “Call of Duty remains the best-selling video game franchise in US full game dollar sales for a record 16th consecutive year”.

Last month, following the release of its November 2024 data, Circana declared that EA Sports College Football 25 had become the best-selling sports game ever in the US.

This still wasn’t enough to dethrone Call of Duty over the course of the entire year, however, meaning EA‘s game had to settle for second place.

Elsewhere in Circana’s data, US spending on video games was down 1.1% in 2024 compared to 2023.

This was mainly due to a 25% drop in spending on video game hardware, because sales in content (software, DLC and subscriptions) and accessories were up 2% and 6% respectively.

“No question video game hardware had a rough one,” Circana executive director Mat Piscatella wrote on BlueSky. “But it was expected with Switch being in market for so long and both PS5/XBS past their selling peaks.

“Total 2024 hardware spend of $4.9B is still significantly higher than the $3.9B seen in 2019. Shrug.”
