Castlevania Symphony of the Night, Goldeneye 007, and 3 Other Classic Video Games That Still Hold Up Today

Some video games are just timeless. No matter how many years pass, no matter the graphical and technological advancements, these classics still draw players in with their captivating stories, memorable characters, and unique vibe and atmosphere.

Even though the mechanics and gameplay might seem outdated compared to today’s standards, the magic they created back in the day remains intact. These five games, despite being released decades ago, have aged extremely well and continue to offer a great experience.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is part of the series that created the Metroidvania genre. Released in 1997 by Konami, it brought a fresh twist to the series with its non-linear gameplay and RPG elements.

The game is a masterclass in level design and lets players explore a gothic castle filled with secrets and challenges. The music and atmosphere still feel eerie and captivating, and the gameplay, though simple by today’s standards, remains enjoyable.

4. Metal Gear Solid

Metal Gear Solid may not have the updated graphics or intricate gameplay mechanics of its successors, but it more than makes up for it with its story and atmosphere. The game was a trailblazer in narrative-driven gameplay, offering a mature and engaging storyline filled with complex characters and surprising twists, something that very few games were doing at that time.

The stealth mechanics, though basic compared to later games, were revolutionary at the time and still provide a satisfying challenge. It’s a game that showcases how powerful strong narratives can be in a video game.

3. GoldenEye 007

GoldenEye 007 was a game-changer for first-person shooters on consoles. Released for the Nintendo 64, it brought the fast-paced action of James Bond to life. While the graphics are dated, the core gameplay is still incredibly fun and is perhaps one of the most revolutionary FPS games after Doom.

The multiplayer mode, in particular, was a defining feature that many gamers remember fondly. It’s a game that remains very fun to play, especially with friends. The game is proof that good gameplay will always stand the test of time.

2. Final Fantasy 8

Final Fantasy 8 often gets overshadowed by its predecessor, Final Fantasy VII, as well as other games in the franchise, but it’s still an incredible game in its own right. The story is centered around a group of young mercenaries and is rich with emotion and depth.

The game introduced the unique junction system, which gave players a new way to customize their characters. While it wasn’t as universally praised as other titles in the series, the game’s storytelling and character development continue to resonate with players and hold up pretty well even today. It’s a game that definitely deserves recognition as a classic.

1. Deus Ex

Deus Ex is a game that was far ahead of its time. Set in a dystopian cyberpunk world, it combined RPG elements with first-person shooting in a way that felt fresh and innovative both for its time and even now.

The game offered players a level of freedom and choice that was rare at the time, allowing them to approach situations in multiple ways. Even today, few games manage to capture the same atmosphere and vibe that Deus Ex delivered. While its sequels were great in their own right, the original remains a standout title that still holds up pretty well.
