CMCFL round 14: Cervantes snap Dandaragan’s nine-game winning streak, Moora end season winless

Red hot Cervantes Tiger Sharks have taken down ladder leaders Dandaragan in a dominant display with their 24.13 (157) to 15.13 (103) win.

Dandaragan’s nine-game winning run came to an end at the hands of Cervantes, who proved too good in the high-scoring contest.

A 5.2 to 2.4 opening quarter in Cervantes’ favour became a goalfest with both teams coming out guns blazing in the second term.

Down by 16 at quarter-time, the Saints kicked nine goals to turn the tables, with both teams combining for 15 majors in the second period.

Despite their big performance, Dandaragan couldn’t keep pace and only managed one goal coming out of the main break.

Cervantes kicked another five as they took a 22-point lead into the final quarter, but they didn’t take their foot off the gas, kicking another 8.4 to close out the match.

Seven goals from Tiger Shark Isaac Devitt-Boyd has him top of the goal-kickers’ list at 38 for the season with just one game left to play, leaving second-placed Campbell Putland with ground to make up on 31 goals.

Jacob Green’s five goals and Gus Devitt’s three helped Cervantes pull through, while Mathew Helms kicked five for Dandaragan in the loss.

Jurien Bay ended Moora’s season with a 21.21 (147) to 5.6 (36) beat-down, leaving the Mavericks with the wooden spoon and finishing the year without a win.

It was a one-sided contest from the get-go, with the Bulldogs going up 7.8 (50) to 0.1 (1) at the end of the first quarter.

The home side managed just one goal through the first three quarters, while Jurien Bay put through seven goals in the third quarter alone, going on to win the contest by 111 points.

Cam Somerville and Curtis Altinier dominated with seven and five goals each for Jurien Bay, Bradley Smith had three for the Mavericks.

With Moora’s season over, they finish the year with an 0-12 record, their second straight wooden spoon.

The club has been in rebuild mode since the 2022 season, when the Mavericks took out the minor premiership with an 11-1 record.

Moora went on to reach the grand final that season but lost to Cervantes by 25 points and have since put up a 1-23 record over the past two years.

The rest of the CMCFL will play their final home-and-away game this week, with Cervantes a chance to steal the minor premiership in the last week.

They will have to travel to Lancelin and grab a win, while also banking on Jurien Bay getting the job done against Dandaragan at home.

In the reserves matches, Jurien Bay got up in the top-of-the-table clash against Moora 7.6 (48) to 6.7.6 (48) to 6.4 (40) and Cervantes took care of Dandaragan 13.4 (82) to 5.9 (39).

Moora got up in the hockey over Jurien Bay with a 3-0 win and it was a 1-1 draw between Cervantes and Dandaragan.

While in the A-grade netball, the Saints were the victors with a 51-36 triumph against the Tiger Sharks, and the Bulldogs blew past the Mavericks in a 61-17 contest.
