Nothing splits the Gears of War community apart as much as the online experience. Almost every online shooter has some toxicity that fans have to work through, and the same can be said for Gears of War.

The most recent discussion was sparked by a clip showcasing an altercation between players. While the game is meant to be a team-based co-op experience, not everything goes as smoothly as planned, as is shown by the discourse occurring on X.

Most games allow the player to create their own builds, which they can then use to start with their choice of weapons and equipment. This is not the case with Gears of War, as all players start with the same weapon and can swap them out for the ones they find on the map.

This makes for an interesting dynamic, but it also means you won’t always get the weapons you desire. A clip circulating on X shows how some montagers, (people who create in-game video clips,) react when another player picks up their desired gun—the sniper in this case. We can see the player’s body blocking the one with the sniper until they drop the gun for the montager.

The clip has received backlash and support from netizens. Some feel entitled to play as they want, including ruining others’ experiences because they have paid the same amount for the game.

Some netizens find the backlash funny, implying that it’s not a big deal and that people should take it as a joke. Some even offer solutions, such as emptying the clip before dropping the gun, as a way to troll the trolls.

Others have stated that they don’t understand why some players act like this when they can wait for the next round, a take that seems to be dismissed by other people.

The announcement of Gears of War: E-Day has reignited interest in the franchise, with many now going back to play the online version of the title. However, if this is what they experience, how many will stick around?

The game, slated to launch sometime in 2025, will revamp the game and showcase beloved characters in a new light. While they are still experienced fighters, it would be their first time facing anything such as the Locust hordes and trying to survive as they fight through the world of Sera.

As such, the two characters will be seen interacting with the world and each other like never before. We can expect the story to have an emotional pull and showcase events mentioned as part of the Gears of War lore.
