Cool start to summer expected to ease bushfires after Perth sweltered through last week of spring

It will be a cooler start to summer for Perth after the city sweltered through hot weather during the last week of spring.

The city will stay in the mid 20s and even face the possibility of rain after a hot week, which was above 30C on most days.

After a max of 30C on Saturday the temperature will drop to a top of 25C on Sunday with a medium chance of showers.

A chance of showers will continue into Monday and Tuesday with the temperature dropping even lower to a max of 22C at the start of the week.

The weather will heat back up slightly on Thursday with a max of 26C before the temperature reaches a top of 27C on Friday.

Fires sparked across the State during the week with a massive blaze in the Shire of Dandaragan remaining at an emergency level and burning through 79,000 hectares before it was downgraded on Friday night.

The fire is still not contained and controlled with the Department of Fire and Emergency warning it is not safe for people in Wedge Island and Grey to return home.

There is an extreme fire danger rating in place for Stirling, Fitzgerald inland, Arthur, and Lakes.

The Bureau of Meteorology warned of an extreme fire danger due to hot and dry temperatures, combined with north to northwesterly winds in the afternoon on Saturday.

The chance of a thunderstorm in the afternoon and evening also posed a risk.

Senior meteorologist Catherine Schelfhout said light showers and a decrease in the temperature should minimise the risk of bushfires on Sunday.

“The north westerly bringing an increase in humidity and then a south westerly and some light showers from Sunday afternoon should definitely ease things right back,” she said.

“The only other thing that’s sort of significant at the moment is that there’s some thunderstorms … but they should be inland from where Cervantes is so hopefully not having an impact on the fire.”
