Ms Ivanova is the current EU Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education, and Youth. Holding a Master’s degree in International Economic Relations, she previously served as Bulgaria’s member of the ECA from 2013-2023. Her nomination was backed by 581 votes in favour, 34 against, and 31 abstentions.

The position of Bulgarian ECA member became vacant in September 2023 when Ms Ivanova’s was appointed as an EU Commissioner. On September 4, 2024, the Bulgarian Council of Ministers nominated her to return to the ECA for the period 2025–2030.

Next Steps

The final decision will be taken by EU member states in the Council.

Background

As stipulated in the EU Treaty, each member state proposes a candidate to serve on the ECA. The Council of the EU, after consulting the European Parliament, adopts the list of members for a six-year term.
