Diorites shrug off early inaccuracy to tame Tigers in derby clash
Notwithstanding some early inaccuracy, Mines Rovers found reliable avenues to goal when Jess Bolton’s four majors underpinned a 46-point win, 7.12 (54) to 1.0 (6), last Saturday against Boulder in the Goldfields Football League’s women’s competition.
Despite dominance in general play, the Diorites misfired for seven behinds to quarter-time and were only marginally better with 2.7 to half-time.
The blue-and-whites, however, finally got value for effort in a five-goal second half while cruising to an 11th win.
Bolton’s haul was backed by Jada Hansen’s two goals and one to Brandi Hansen.
Chelsea Ponta kicked Boulder’s lone goal.
Last weekend’s result left Mines Rovers a game and percentage clear in first place over Railways.
Boulder’s big improvement in 2024 is backed by seven wins, but they are virtually resigned to finishing third with four rounds of the qualifying series remaining.
They trail Railways by three games and percentage.
Boulder upset Mines Rovers in round one but have been held to a combined six goals in three subsequent matches against their traditional rivals.
Outside that round-one loss, the only other mark on the Diorites’ record was a round five draw with Railways.
Also last weekend, Railways chalked-up a 10th win by 52 points against Kalgoorlie, 9.11 (65) to 2.1 (13).
Marley Kelman led the Panthers’ charge with three goals, complemented by two each to Amelia Pettit and Drew Epis.
In round 17 this Saturday, Boulder host Kalgoorlie at Digger Daws Oval at 9am and Kambalda play Mines Rovers from 11am at Kambalda West Oval.
Kalgoorlie, under Shane Coysh, are the two-time defending premiers but have managed just three wins after a mass exodus of players from 2023.
Ladder:
Mines Rovers 46 points; Railways 42; Boulder 28; Kalgoorlie 12; Kambalda 0.
Leading goal kickers:
W. Piringer (Kalgoorlie) 23; D. Epis (Railways) 23; M. Kelman (Railways) 21; C. Halligan (Mines Rovers) 20; T. Revell (Mines Rovers) 19; P. Ulijn (Boulder) 15; T. Stokes (Boulder) 15; J. Bolton (Mines Rovers) 13; J. Hansen (Mines Rovers) 12; A. Reid (Railways) 12.
