Driver hits police cruiser, injures ISP trooper responding to Saturday morning I-465 crash
A state trooper is recovering at home after he was struck by a car on I-465 early Saturday morning.
At about 3:14 a.m., an Indiana State Police trooper was responding to a crash near the 1.5 mile marker on I-465 East on the south side of the city. That segment of the highway is under construction, and concrete barriers block both shoulders.
The trooper parked in the left lane to direct traffic away from the crash site, where multiple disabled vehicles awaited towing. His police vehicle’s lights were flashing, an ISP spokesperson said.
A blue 2002 Honda Civic struck the trooper’s vehicle from behind and pushed it into the officer, who was taken to an area hospital before being released home. The Honda’s driver remains hospitalized in stable condition.
Investigators believe alcohol was a factor in the crash, an ISP spokesperson told IndyStar.
Indiana law requires drivers to move over for emergency vehicles stopped on the side of the road. If it’s not possible to change lanes, drivers should slow to 10 mph below the speed limit.
