Dwarf Fortress Game Devs Reveal What’s Next For Them After The Game’s Sudden Success

Tarn and Zach Adams, the creators of the hit indie game Dwarf Fortress, have been enjoying the fruits of their labor. Following their game’s newfound success, Zach has decided to spoil themselves by purchasing a new home and a Honda Civic.

Currently, Dwarf Fortress has sold over 800,000 copies and has over a million wishlists. In an interview with PCGamer, the two were asked if they plan on treating themselves if the game sells a million copies. Tarn said they “didn’t actually think of [hitting a million sales]. Because you’re like, ‘When is that going to happen?'”

As the interview continued the two explained that the Adventure Mode update is being treated as a “gentle update.” This will be the first time they’ve communicated with people who wishlist the game which is “over a million of them.” After the update’s launch, Tarn said they might have “a little party,” while Zach suggested they might take “a trip to somewhere exotic.”

For those unaware, Dwarf Fortress is a strategy game with a procedurally generated world. In it, players take control of clans of dwarves who are looking to find and expand their homes in the mountains.

Dwarf Fortress began to pick up a lot of traction late last year. It made its way over to Steam on December 6 with various upgrades, some of which included new graphics, music, and more. Within that same month, the game had sold nearly 500,000 copies.
