EA Sports FC 25 enjoys record launch to top US chart ahead of Astro Bot

EA Sports FC 25 topped September’s US software chart following a record launch, according to data from market research firm Circana.

The game saw double-digit percentage growth compared to EA Sports FC 24 during its launch month in September 2023.

That was enough to see it record the highest US launch month dollar sales of any football (soccer) game released to date, said Mat Piscatella, executive director of video games at Circana.

PS5 exclusive Astro Bot entered the chart at No.2, debuting as the 25th best-selling game of 2024 so far.

Other new release to make September’s top 20 chart included Switch exclusive The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom at No.4, NBA 2K25 at No.7, and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 at No.18.

These results were based on physical sales alone given that publishers Nintendo, Take-Two and Focus Entertainment don’t share digital sales data.

NHL 25 was also a new entry at No.9, as was Marvel vs Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics at No.16.

PS5 remained the top-performing console in both unit and dollar sales in September, with Xbox Series X/S ranking second in dollars and Switch second in units.

Digital PS5 consoles now account for 18% of the platform’s total life-to-date unit sales, while Xbox Series X sales now make up the majority (51%) of total Xbox Series console sales in the US.

Total US consumer spending on game hardware, content and accessories in September fell 6% year-over-year to $4.38 billion, driven by a 44% drop in hardware spending and a 3% dip in content.

Year-to-date consumer spending is flat year-over-year at $40.67 billion.
