Enough Jungles, Helldivers 2 Needs Suburban Warfare in Ruined Cities

Helldivers 2 took the gaming world by storm when it was released, and it appears that the recent “#BuffDivers update” has restored the game’s former glory. With players now flocking back to their duties in spreading managed democracy across the galaxy, the game has never been more alive in recent months.

But amidst all the excitement, one question lingers: is it time for a change of scenery?

A recent post on the official r/Helldivers subreddit has sparked a discussion about the possibility of introducing ruined city warfare and suburban battlegrounds to the game. The idea has quickly gained traction among fans, who are eager to see Arrowhead Game Studios take the game in a new direction.

A Cry for Urban Warfare in Helldivers 2

The original poster on Reddit made a compelling case for why Helldivers 2 needs to expand its horizons:

The idea of fighting through the ruins of once-thriving cities, battling Terminids and bots in the streets and buildings, has clearly struck a chord with players.

The prospect of a more varied and immersive battlefield is an enticing one:

But it’s not just about the aesthetics. Players are also craving more unique environments to put their skills and equipment to the test:

Of course, if Arrowhead does decide to introduce urban warfare, players have some expectations. Destructible environments, in particular, seem to be a must-have:

Imagine the chaos of a Battlefield 4-style destructible city, with Helldivers battling it out amidst crumbling buildings and collapsing structures. It’s a tantalizing prospect, to say the least.

While the idea of urban warfare in Helldivers 2 is exciting, it’s not entirely without precedent. As one player pointed out, the game has already dabbled in this kind of environment:

The mention of Meridia is an interesting one, as it ties into a popular fan theory about the fate of the Illuminate faction. According to the theory, the Illuminate were never truly defeated in the original game, but instead retreated to another dimension.

Could their return be imminent? Only time will tell, but some fans are convinced that the Illuminate will make their presence known on October 26th, during the game’s first Liberty Day celebration:

Recent leaks have added fuel to the fire, and when combined with the developers’ slow but steady dropping of cryptic clues about the Illuminate’s return, many believe a full-scale invasion is definitely on the horizon.

Of course, this is all just speculation for now. But one thing is clear: Helldivers 2 players are hungry for new challenges and new environments to conquer. Whether it’s ruined cities, suburban warfare, or something else entirely, Arrowhead would be wise to listen to the community and keep things fresh.

What do you think? Is it time for Helldivers 2 to introduce urban warfare, or are you happy with the game’s current selection of battlegrounds? Let us know in the comments below!
